Chinese Canadian communities have long contributed to Edmonton’s civic and cultural life, yet their experiences of identity, resilience, and racism remain largely untold in public discourse when compared to those with Indigenous and Black backgrounds. Despite a growing population, these communities continue to face systemic barriers especially in anti-racism initiatives, storytelling platforms, and heritage representation.

Racism against Chinese Canadians is often subtle, chronic, and culturally specific. Many community members, especially newcomers and seniors, experience discrimination not through overt hostility but through language barriers, stereotyping, or exclusion from mainstream narratives. Language discrimination such as being mocked for accents or denied opportunities due to limited English proficiency is a form of systemic racism that silences cultural expression and limits civic participation.
